We are a very sociable church, and we like to get to know each other’s friends. We do this in various ways, including a regular book club, trips to the cinema, and to the pub! Here are some experiences of our student members ...
“What I love about Christ Church is that I can be open and honest with everyone. Being a small church, we know each other well - we really do feel like family! It’s brilliant being able to study the Bible together, and to encourage each other. In the two years I’ve been involved in Christ Church, I feel like I’ve really grown in my relationship with God through studying His word, and a few months ago I made the step of being baptised in the sea – which was awesome! Being able to make a public declaration of my faith in Jesus in front of lots of my friends was amazing!” “When I was a fresher, I was approached at CU by a guy giving out lollies and leaflets. He told me that there was a new Church starting in Brighton, one that met in a pub, but more importantly one that met at seven in the evening. I went along and enjoyed the snacks and laid back atmosphere. I was invited round for thanksgiving dinner and, not being able to cook well for myself went along. After this I was hooked, and went along and started to get to know the other every week. Quite quickly I became a member of the church members. Then I began to do one to one discipleship with one of the Churches student workers. Gradually, I learnt more about God and about the Church and how it was run. I was given numerous opportunities to either lead the Sunday meeting or do a reading. This helped me to gain confidence, which in turn let me discuss the Bible better with non-Christians and I learnt from the older members of the Church answers to a lot of the tricky questions that people at the meetings asked.
Over the year that I have been a member of Christ Church, I have learnt not only a great deal from the Bible but also from the other members of the Church and their advice had been priceless in dealing with some of the problems that my first year of university threw at me. Although I have put a lot of time and effort into the Church, this time has been rewarding and has helped me grow as a Christian immensely. Aside from the general benefits of being a part of the Church, I have also gained countless meals that have certainly helped me keep healthy despite the best efforts of my own cooking. I have also learnt how to create Web sites and am now running the Church website, (not too shabby on the old CV) and am also join manager of the Sunday afternoon meeting.
So, what have I got out of being a member of the Church (apart from a greatly increased quality of my relationship with Christ)? I've got the opportunity to grow and give as much or as little as I feel I can whilst getting a lot back regardless of what I give to the Church. If you’re looking for a Church when you can be challenged and take an active part in the operations of the Church then Christ Church is perfect for you. I don't know where I would have been if I hadn’t joined the Church, but one this I do know is that it would have been very hard for it to be better than the situation I am in right now."
