What is Church in the Pub?

Church in a pub has two different types of meeting:

  • On the first Sunday of the month we meet together to discuss important and interesting questions in the comfort of a pub function room with a drink in our hands. Suggest a topic for church in a pub

  • On the other three Sundays we meet together to sing praises, eat together and study the Bible. These meeting are particularly suitable for students.

- 6.30pm for food and 7pm for the start of discussion. We'll discuss issues such as: Where are we going? Does God care? As well as thinking about celebrity and the thirst for fame. What is beauty? What does a life lived well look like? Are we more moral than God? What can I do with all this worry? What is success? How can I keep going?

We want to see God’s perspective on these issues, we want to see what Jesus has to say about these things. We want people to share their thoughts. Throughout the discussions we will have one ear open to the world around us, the messages we absorb each day from our friends, from the talking box in the corner of the living room, from Facebook, from YouTube, from newspapers and from the city we live in.

We also have one ear open to what God has to say about those things, what he says about what our lives are about, and the difference it makes to live life as we were made to live. We will chat, listen to music, watch clips and read the Bible together for an hour.

It’s for anyone and everyone, for people who’ve no idea what this God thing is all about, for people who are asking questions and for us to think deeper about these things. It’s heavy on questions and light on easy answers to those questions. It’s a space to tentatively put toes into the pool of a life with the Maker of the Universe. It’s there to be used by us all as a place where we can help explain and explore our faith with our friends, acquaintances and others.

On the other three Sundays we meet:

At 6.30pm to eat a meal together (arrive on time to make sure you get food). At 7pm we'll begin our time together by singing praises to God. Following this, we'll have a short 'Doctrine'(a summary of the Bibles teaching on something) slot. Click here to see a sample of what we look at. We'll continue our time together by looking in depth at a book of the Bible in a group Bible study. We'll end our time with prayer and singing.

We hope this meeting will be especially suitable and helpful for students to grow in their faith and enjoy time with each other.

We meet in the upper room of Cricus Circus pub, Preston Circus

How to get there...

Circus Circus is on the 5(A and B) bus routes, and can be walked to from the 25 bus route. The address is: 2 Preston Road Brighton BN1 4QF.

It's also easy to get to from London Road train station (two stops from Falmer station and one from Brighton). Just come out on the Ditchling Rise side and then walk down hill. When you get to the bottom of the road, turn left and the pub will be on your right in a few hundred yards.
